Search place names

The Search place-name service contains Sweden's official place name register. All names are searchable and displayed with a marker on a map.

Our field of activities

  • To approve place-names in the real property register and for official mapping.
  • Provide advisory services and assistance regarding place-names to the public and to authorities.
  • To manage the place-name register and web service about Swedish place names
  • To be a consultative body to which proposed alterations on place names are submitted for consideration by the Government and other public authorities.

To provide information and increase awareness of place-names in society, we organize courses and seminars. We also take part in national and international cooperation regarding place-name practices. We collaborate with the Swedish Institute for Language and Folklore and the Swedish National Heritage Board and belong to the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN).
